Auto Air Conditioning Leaks

Leaks can happen in many places: Hoses, fittings, and pressure lines Your automotive AC system contains several hoses of steel, or aluminum, lines that carry both high and low pressure refrigerant. Leaks in these components will cause loss of air conditioning refrigerant and poor performance.

The Auto Air Evaporator, sometimes referred to as the evaporator core, is one of the two heat exchangers in an A/C system. The evaporator is usually located inside the vehicle, often deeply hidden under the dash.

Refrigerant (years ago referred to as Freon) enters the evaporator in the form of a low pressure liquid and is metered through a device called an expansion valve or orifice tube. The evaporator is the part of the system that gets “cold” air passes through it and into the cabin through the vents in your dash. Condenser

The condenser for your Auto Airco unit is also a heat exchanger. Its function is to give off heat and remove it from the system. A condenser looks much like your engine’s radiator and usually sits in front of it, many times being cooled by the same radiator fan or condenser fan. The cooling fan is essential for low speed operation when there is limited natural air flow. These fans can be electric or manually controlled by a fan clutch.

Auto Air Compressor Failure

Compressors can fail for many reasons, including leaks, clutches, or internal failure. Modern Auto Air uses new compressors of the highest quality that meet or exceed OEM specifications.

On some models internal control valves can be replaced without removal, saving you a lot of money.

The compressor is belt driven by the engine through a magnetic clutch or clutch coil which is controlled by a relay and usually receives an activation signal through the engine control computer or PCM.

The compressor may also be controlled by a high or low A/C pressure switch or temperature probes or amplifier.

Auto Air Condenser Fan Failure

Cooling fans for your auto air system can either be mechanically controlled by a fan clutch or powered by an electric motor – sometimes referred to as a radiator fan or condenser fan, depending on the application.

A faulty cooling fan can cause overheating and damage to your engine as well as high pressure and reduced performance of your air conditioning or “Auto AC” system.


High pressure will almost always lead to damaged A/C components and loss of refrigerant “Freon”. Cooling fans come on when temperatures in your car’s engine or AC system are elevated.

This is critical at low speeds or in traffic when natural air flow through the unit’s radiator and condenser is not great enough to remove the heat from the engine and AC system.

Electronic Controls

Electronic controls can include relays, pressure switches, temperature sensors, computer modules, sun sensors just to name a few. Modern Auto Air has the necessary diagnostic tools to trouble shoot and repair these issues.

Airco-Blend Doors & Temperature Controls

Auto Air Blend doors control or “blend” air flow from a combination of heated and cooled air to maintain a set cabin temperature. They are controlled by cable, electric or vacuum actuators.

Located inside the HVAC case, difficulty in replacement ranges from simple to completely removing the dash and air box from the car. Mode Doors control air flow to the correct “mode” ie: defrost, panel vents or floor vents.
